Conversation With Sat-December 17, 2024
Sat answers questions about remembering who we really are, releasing the struggle, no separation between puppet and puppeteer, conscious and unconscious activity & Karma, condemnation, why was I born and witnessing and stay meditation.
Question 1: In this Maya that we live, I feel pain, suffering, and confusion when I forget my Reality. For example, when I burn my hand, I become more vigilant and conscious the next time.
Why don’t I have the same vigilance when it comes to remembering who I am and who I am not? Why do I keep forgetting, burning my hand and suffering again?
Sat: Until we learn that we are not the one that burns its hand and remembers, we will burn our hand, in order to remember it. When we get to the point where we are really witnessing and there is no question of burning the hand as ourself, remembering as oneself and recalling again as oneself- this will continue. That means we still have tendencies or vasanas in us- which are very, very gradual to get rid of as a human being.
But just the fact that the questioner understands that something like this can remind them of a Reality that most people don’t even know there is such a thing as Reality, they have accomplished a lot in this lifetime. Again, we have to get to a point where we do not own the hand of the one that is burnt and needs to go back to the Reality, as we identify with the Reality and there is no question about anything else.
Question 2: Sometimes, when I want to sit in silence or contemplate, I feel a sense of disappointment that I wasn’t able to use my previous experiences to address my weaknesses.
I can recognize that this is just a thought, but in reality, it stops me. As a result, I let go of both the feeling of disappointment and the desire to sit and contemplate.
What is the best approach when these feelings of disappointment arise?
Sat: Meditation is who we are; it is not where we go to contemplate our own thoughts of disappointment. It is our State of Being.
The only reason we sometimes sit down [to meditate] is to remind ourselves that ‘this silence is who I am, who the “I” is.’ Otherwise, it is always there, we don’t need to sit down. That is why I call it ‘I am meditation, I am not doing meditation.’
If you are sitting down and wrestling in your mind, you might as well go and fulfill your desire. We cannot bully ourselves to sit down and meditate. But by understanding, we realize that the simplest way of an excellent meditation is to just release the struggle. Whether you are walking, talking, driving or sitting in the lotus position in front of a candle. When we identify with our frustration, we are no longer practicing any type of release.
In the end, if you cannot release yourself of meditation not being about juggling thoughts in the mind, then meditation does not need to be done. You could pick up another practice. For example, remind yourself to watch the thoughts as you are walking or doing your chores. But the simplest, the simplest is when there is no fight, when there is no contradiction. When there are no opposites, you have arrived.
Question 3: At Sai Center on 12.1.24, you said: "As long as we think we are a human, we listen to our conscious voice. In the end, you are the conscious voice, I promise you. You are the conscious voice that you were receiving as an individual. As Totality, you are the one that actually prompts every other actor that thinks they are the entity.”
My understanding is that ultimately the One that is the conscious voice prompts even the entities that may not be conscious, and therefore identifying themselves with their mind and body, etc.
My question is do these entities receive the divine prompting even though they may not be conscious?
Sat: Again, let’s look at this way: you have a puppet and you are the puppeteer. You have strings attached to the hands, legs and the head of the puppet. Now, the puppet is totally unconscious and yet the puppeteer moves it. Just imagine that this puppet, or better said, the puppeteer forgets its own activity that it is doing, in order to move the puppet. The concentration is on the puppet rather than on itself.
The same thing applies here. As a human being, we have a puppeteer, but the puppeteer is not separate from our Reality, ourself. So, even if you are unconscious, still the puppeteer moves you around.
Then you say that ‘I moved myself around.’ As you wake up, you realize that the direction you were getting, the prompting you were getting, the thoughts of making a decision that you were getting, actually was you, it was you the whole time.
So, now we listen to our conscious voice and we get direction if we are lucky. Most people don’t have inner ears to hear. But then it gets to the point that there is no separation. The humanhood has lessened to the point that it is not available to go and hear the conscious voice, and only the Omniscience is present or the puppeteer.
This is what we are achieving- relying on our silence and intuition more and more, rather than the contradiction of the mind and emotions. We are beginning to see that we are much greater than trying to struggle to get something.
In other words, I always say that what you want, you already have it. What do I mean by that? As Totality, everything is within our own Consciousness! Don’t limit yourself to an activity of humanhood and you see that it comes to you.
A follow up question: Based on what You just said, do You mean that there is a point where the puppeteer and the puppet become one? Or, the puppet just disappears?
Sat: The show ends, so there is no need of a puppet.
Question 4: After the Livestream on 11.18.24, someone asked you if one’s conscious activity happens on its own. You replied: “100%, 100%, and it’s funny because even your unconscious activity happens by itself, but you think that you are doing it.”
If activities happen on their own, whether conscious or unconscious, whose fault is it? Where does karma or reincarnation stand in relation to this wisdom?
Sat: They don’t stand a chance. They don’t stand a chance, but this has to be realized not just inspired by. What I mean by realized and understood is when you really see that the humanhood is limited and limitation appears to have karma. But as the Reality of the Self, the higher Self, karma and all of this [being] conscious and unconscious makes no sense.
As it was said in Most Precious and I have said it before, when I asked about karma, it came that it is just a false law in the creation, or something like that, which shocked Me. I was sitting down and writing, I could not believe it. Because prior to that, karma was very real for Me and it should be real for those who think they are a human, because it gives them at least some release of consequences, action and reaction.
But once you know that you are not just this limited self, then there is no need to worry about karma. Again, this is what we are trying to do, to release the misunderstanding, misidentification with the limited self, so we can break the imaginary chain of karma and reincarnation.
Question 5: At the last Sai Center on December 15, 2024, You talked about condemnation and how it is a suggestion that is only from the mind.
- Why does the mind have these suggestions? Where do they arise from?
- Is it from impressions from previous lives?
- Why are these suggestions more negative than positive?
Sat: I thoroughly talked about all of that at Sai Center [this past Sunday]. I was hoping that it is clear. The impressions are in duality and this is the realms of duality. The reason there are two sides to everything is to give it a false existence and sensation. This is the realms of sensation and impressions. I am really clueless when it comes to maya, I have to be honest with you.
Why does it rise? If you know that it is not you, then why don’t you settle down and not worry about the rise of something that has very little to do with us, and I have no answer.
Question 6: Thanks to You and our growing wisdom, we now frequently see that we have a choice to go with our thoughts or to simply Stay.
My question is in the moment we recognize that we do have a choice, why do we still sometimes make the wrong choice?
Sat: I honestly think that should be asked of oneself. It is a weakness, that is what it is, not being strong enough as a tower of strength and Staying as a witness. This is really an amazing question to question yourself [with].
Say to yourself, ‘Why am I identifying with this thought? If it is not real, why am I doing that and who is it that is doing it?’ And then go into silence.
This witnessing, which is the main release from humanhood, needs to be practiced or be aware of most of the day. No matter what you do, now and then, more now than then, come back to the Witness. Immediately you will settle down. Immediately the energy goes to the heart. Immediately there is a clarity in what you are doing.
When we have a weakness and are really reacting to things unconsciously, for a moment, wake up and pull yourself back. Don’t let it happen the next time. We need to do it this time. We can’t say ‘Let me be upset now,’ or ‘let me be sensitive now’ or ‘let me be whatever we are and next time …’ It is releasing the changes by the stability of the Self moment to moment, by replacing it [with] the stability of the Self.
That is when there is a peace. When a thought comes that ‘I am not happy,’ and you immediately feel it in your gut- that is a weakness. As soon as it comes, you look not only at the thought but as the Witness and it is gone.
Question 7: On the DVD, Why was I born, You say: “I would like to reiterate how important the question of ‘why were you born?’ is. If you only knew how important it is and yet how neglected as well. If you only knew that the secret of our existence relies on this question; if you only knew that this was the question that started all the suffering!” (March 8, 2005)
Can You please explain to us how the secret of our existence relies on this question? And how this question started all the suffering?
Sat: That is where Contemplative Meditation starts, ‘Why was I born?’ or ‘Was I born?’ The question ‘Was I born?’ or ‘Why was I born?’ is a very, very important question that starts the self-investigation. That is something that I became aware of through a book of Nisargadatta Maharaj in the 80’s. What he said I did and the result I cannot even talk about. He said ‘Go back to the first time you knew you were, whether you were two or three years old.’ I have done this practice with all of you.
When you go that far back to the first experience of you being a human or existing actually, and you can remember it, it is in the file of memory as the first memory that was filed. Then, you go beyond that. You say ‘Then who was I before this first experience?’ I am not going to tell you what happens to you, as a personal experience that you might have with this technique. But I can tell you that this question will be dissolved of ‘How was I born?’ or ‘Why was I born?’ etc. It will be dissolved for you.
Question 8: This past summer when You were finally taking some very well-deserved time for Yourself and all of us were missing You terribly, You told me ‘everyone suffers the illusion.’
Can You please talk to us more about that?
Sat: It is like a child that goes into his bedroom at night in the dark and thinks to himself, ‘What could be in this room … what could be under my bed?’ It is ignorance; ignorance means that we think when the light is off, something bad should be in the room and it is not.
So, in the daytime, ignorance is when we forget who we are and we think that we are many and we have to protect ourself against a second, a third, a fourth, etc. That is what it means.
Question 9: You once explained to me that to understand another person, I need to recognize that I’m protecting my own ego. When I practiced this, it gave me such a sense of freedom, and it felt amazing. I know I need to contemplate this further and continue practicing.
Is there another practice I can do to better understand others?
Sat: Well, let’s practice what you were told first and not go for the second. Go for another question please.
Question 10: I also want to ask, how can I better understand myself? I know You’ve spoken to me about this before, and I am truly grateful for Your guidance.
Sat: You must be kidding Me. Go to the next question. I have talked about that for 23 years; I am not about to do it again!
-Mandana shares her experience with the meditation of Consciousness Being Conscious of Itself. She quotes Sat where She says: “Just look within yourself and see it. When you are fearful, when there is a fear, not you, when there is a fear, look at that entity that says ‘I am fearful’.”
She goes into detail about spending a lot of time listening to this section in particular, and how significant this practice has been for her. She then quotes the following from a private conversation with Sat on November 22nd. “Watch a pattern, recognize it from afar, you have to watch yourself. In watching there is no me and you. I watch a thought coming through Me, I watch a tendency passing by. I watch an emotion rising. I watch things. I did not say that I watch My emotion of anger coming up. No, never, because I was the watcher, I was not being any of them. That is why they call it contemplation; it is so important to contemplate on whatever is happening in your body and mind, by watching it.”
She then talks about watching a movie the week prior, where she was affected by what she was seeing. All the while her husband was perfectly fine and that was because while watching the movie, she was relating to the character’s distress. All the while her husband was simply a watcher. She says that because of all the discussions and the practice of being conscious of the Consciousness Meditation, she was able to have a better understanding of how to be a witness, how not be involved with the characters in the mentioned movie, the thoughts & the emotions etc. She finishes by reiterating her gratitude to Sat for all of these experiences she had had.
Sat: Thank you for sharing. Even if a person hears all this Truth over and over and over for years and years and years, even if they think they are not capable of practicing, at least they know it. At least they know something they did not know before. Then the interest gets increased by the fact that they are beginning to know their weakness, and the things that they see happening within themselves. That interest makes the experience of being the witness much stronger.
Adrienne: This is so perfect, I have to share it, it is like a Christmas present. Right before our talk, I was talking with my son, Reed, about religion. He said ‘Yes, I remember I would go to Sathyam’s house and all I had to do was just sit there with myself.’ I was telling him about the mind and he said ‘Yes, I know, one time I felt like I was the watcher. I felt connected with everything. Then I came back and realized how much everything sucked.’ I asked him, ‘What do you mean everything sucked?’ He said, ‘Then I had to sit there and I was bored again.’ I told him that was amazing that he felt that.
Sat: He had those moments and it is so sweet; he was 2 or 3 years old. I am also glad that he is so honest with himself that he had this great experience, but that it was really boring for him. He voiced every child’s [feeling] that has come to the Sai Center. (Laughs)
Is there anything else anyone wants to share? (No one responds)
Let’s tackle a very old friend, which is witnessing & Staying once more.
With the eyes open or shut, or halfway, whatever makes you comfortable.
Just be quiet in a relaxed way.
Just watch as silence.
Let everything happen or not happen.
Release your humanhood in the ocean of peace & silence.
Can you just stay as the Witness?
Can you?
It is very simple.
Can you take refuge in that position during the day, now and then at least?
Can you give the soul freedom of being God, being free?
Can we Stay without words, entanglement, just free and free?
Before we say Namaste to one another, Merry Christmas to all of you and please now and then pinch yourself to wake up and just watch, enjoy peace and freedom. Namaste guys.
